Training Principles

When most people think of training for running, they think of training programs.  You can find all kinds of them for any distance.  Though training programs are important, much more important is following training principles.  Training programs are a dime a dozen.  They are always changing based on the needs of the individual and the needs of the event you are training for.  Training principles are always solid.  They must be followed in order to have success.  When someone is struggling with their training, it is usually because there is a training principle they are not following.  Training principles are the foundation on which training programs are built .

The most essential training principles are as follows:

  1. Consistency
  2. Progression
  3. Variety
  4. Specificity
  5. Recovery – this principle is so important, I give it a complete a layer of my training                   foundation unto itself.
